“I would walk 500 miles, and I would walk 500 more”.
Inspired by The Proclaimers’ classic anthem, Lucy Group, Lucy Electric South Africa and Lucy Electric Kenya teamed up this September for the 500-mile challenge. Part of a wider Lucy Electric CSR theme to support wildlife and animal welfare, the mission was to support the work of the Rhino Orphanage in South Africa.
Located in Limpopo, South Africa, the Rhino Orphanage is a sanctuary for baby rhinos that have been orphaned due to poaching. The facility provides vital care and rehabilitation to these vulnerable creatures, with the aim of eventually releasing them back into the wild.
For every mile that Lucy Electric staff ran, walked, cycled, or stepped, the company pledged to donate £1 to the Rhino Orphanage. The challenge was set to run for two weeks, from September 4th to September 17th, 2023.
In total, Lucy Electric employees managed to cover an incredible 1,175 miles during the challenge period. To amplify the impact of their collective effort, Lucy Electric decided to top up the donation to a substantial £2,000 for the Rhino Orphanage.
The challenge was also mirrored by Lucy Group Oxford, whose team managed an amazing 1,684 miles, with some members of staff completing the coast-to-coast cycling challenge and others cycling from London to Brighton! That donation was also rounded up to £2,000.
The success of the challenge exceeded everyone’s expectations and will have an important impact on the conservation of these beautiful creatures.
