- Tell us about your role as Group Head of Health, Safety, and Sustainability. What do you find rewarding about your role?
In my current role, I have three main responsibilities:
- Developing and implementing a strategic sustainability framework that fits Lucy Group’s long-term goals. I set sustainability targets and key performance indicators (KPIs) to drive organisational change.
- Embedding sustainability principles into organisational practices and decisions. I provide guidance and ensure training needs are met to create a sustainability-focused culture.
- Monitoring performance. This involves engaging with stakeholders to promote our sustainability initiatives and making sure we comply with relevant law and regulation.
It is really rewarding that I create positive change within my workplace and the natural environment. Furthermore, I get to work with and learn from subject experts and widen my commercial acumen by gaining exposure to aspects of business management that I hadn’t previously encountered.
Greg enjoys having “the ability to influence positive change that benefits both the workplace and the natural environment”.
- How did your interest in Health, Safety and Sustainability develop?
I haven’t always worked in Health, Safety, and Sustainability. When I was 17, I joined the Royal Marines, where I served for 22 years. I then spent six years advising the United Arab Emirates military.
During my time in the Marines, I became responsible for conducting risk assessments to ensure that training was realistic and safe. I grew used to adopting a structured and methodical approach, which meant that Health & Safety was a logical next step when my time in the military reached its natural end. I was driven to apply my leadership and risk management skills in a new setting.
I initially gained a foundation in sustainability by taking qualifications in Environmental Management. I developed an interest in the wider aspects of sustainability, such as the impact of policies and practices on organisations.
Changing career was challenging. However, I navigated the process by focusing on my transferable skills, such as leadership, adaptability, and a strong work ethic. I realised that these skills meant that I would be able to adjust to a new role.
“A key question arises: How do I apply my existing skills to a different environment?”
- What are you doing to continue developing your expertise in Health, Safety and Sustainability? How do you think your role will change in the future?
I hold multiple professional certifications, which requires maintaining a Continuous Professional Development (CPD) portfolio. I usually complete around 30 hours of learning per certification per year. I also follow legal, technological, and sector-specific changes to stay up to date.
I already have a master’s degree in health & safety. I have recently started another master’s, this time in sustainability. Developing my knowledge of this evolving field will help me navigate the complexities of the subject and apply relevant insights at work. This will help support our increasing organisational focus on sustainability as Lucy Group grows.
“Following discussions with our HR department, I have started another master’s course in sustainability to develop a deeper understanding of this evolving field”.
